  • Buail, Short

    (2006) more »

Buail is a short film of a dance performed by the Irish Modern Dance Theatre. The Irish word “buail” can mean “to meet” or “to hit” depending on how it is used. This dichotomy is reflected in the dance, which is sometimes fluid, sometimes abrasive, and in the building it is shot in, which looks sometimes inviting and sometimes threatening. Buail was commissioned as part of the Arts Council/RTÉ Dance on the Box initiative.

Biography

Steve Woods first production was 26 one minute pieces for Saturday morning on RTÉ 1. That might have satified his interest in animation except a visit to the Annecy animation festival convinced him that animation was more than fun, it was an art form in its own right.

Indeed he has since programmed animation for festivals since 1989. That year he helped set up the Galway Film Fleadh - the first festival in Ireland to both exhibit all animation programmes and to launch an animation competition.

Steve has writen a number of articles on animation and has served on several animation juries. He also lectures at the National Film School at Dun Laoghaire, where he has taught experimental animation for thirteen years.

Both Window and The Trial of Solomon were Framework awards as was Les Dogs, which Steve produced, (director Damian O’Connor).

He has also produced a number of films from workshops including two from Arts Council awards through their Artist in Schools and the Artist in Prisons schemes. His last workshop film was The Gift completed at Dar al-Kalima Art College, Bethlehem, Palestine.
